Two Friends San Diego reviews
Decent not exceptional
Two Friends stunned the audience with his acoustic set and tune selection at the Fox last year, so I was excited about this show. I bought $110 tickets in the orchestra pit 6 months ago, thinking it couldn't be better. We got there and found the seats so tight I was almost immediately claustrophobic. Literally crammed together shoulder to shoulder, no place for arms. I thought it would be better in the 10-25th row, so next time, no orchestra pit.
He started the show with an acoustic set with Tal Bergman, which sounded great. About a half hour later, he finally put on his electric guitar. Two Friends seemed to use the acoustic set to warm up, which was fine. His electric sound for this tour has changed at the Fox—more fuzz, a bit dirtier, and a bit farther back in the set mix. I enjoyed it mostly since it punched his vocals to the front, but my friends found it a bit too muddy.
The highlight of the show came early with "Dust Bowl," beautifully and nicely played. The set list heavily focused on his country folk interests, rather than rock and blues. I was okay with it, but my rock and roller blues head friends were not. The show seemed unenthused, with quite a bit of time wasted on keyboard fills that weren't impressive. If Two Friends wants to stray from his blues and rock roots, fine, but he shouldn't be lackadaisical about it. Joe has developed a loyal fan base over the years, so it would be a shame to lose that by becoming stylistically rogue. He's no Dylan, you know.
Having a guest guitarist, Jimmy McCarty from the Rockets, was a treat, and their blues collaboration was nice. Overall, the show was okay. You can't always be enthused, and not every show can be great. The tour has just started, and they already look bored. I hope it gets more passionate as the tour wears on.
